This is the story of Aleks.

One day Aleks was visiting Guildford and passed by a new shop (Art & Grind) that was opening and advertising an open call for submissions to win tuition for a one week residency in Sicily to hone photography skills as an amateur but it was due the next day. She decided to give it a shot, and she entered. Long story short, she was shortlisted, and she won. Here is the rest of her story.

In Aleks’ original statement of intent, she shared the following:

I've always loved taking pictures. It started as a fun way to capture moments, but quickly grew into something much more meaningful. Photography has become my way to unwind and see the world in a new light. It's not just a hobby; it's become a passion that feeds my soul, especially in my line of work with mental health. Looking through the lens, I find a unique kind of peace, capturing the beauty and stories around me.

In my work with mental health, I've seen how powerful simple joys can be in bringing light to our lives. Through my photography, I hope to do just that - to share moments of beauty and wonder that might offer someone a brief respite or a new perspective. This residency isn't just a chance for me to grow; it's an opportunity to bring something back to my community and to the people I work with, helping to brighten their day as they do mine. I believe in the power of photography to connect us, to help us see the world and each other a little differently.

Then she went to Sicily with Matt & Andreea for her residency with their organisation, https://www.clickclicktravel.com/ Little did she realise just how much she personally needed this investment in herself and what it would inspire for her. Here are a few of her images from the trip:

When I spoke to her after the trip, she told me it had been truly a life changing trip for her. Below is her reflection,

“Before my trip, I didn't have any specific goals or expectations. I just wanted to learn something new about photography, meet new people, and have a good time. I ended up achieving all that, but I also gained something even more significant. I found myself. After the trip, I quit my job and decided to take some time to figure out what I really want to do.

During the trip, we explored three different topics, each shared by different people with their unique perspectives. This experience turned out to be a journey into the most important part of myself, helping me realize what I want and need to do:

  • First, we discussed landscapes, our connection with nature, what it offers us, and what we want to share about it. This made me reflect on how deeply nature influences my creativity and well-being.

  • Next, we talked about how photography connects with our past, childhood memories, and roots. This reminded me a lot about who I am and where I come from.

  • Lastly, we talked about the advertising world. Instead of focusing on its competitive side, we looked at the joy, fun, and creativity it can bring. It highlighted the importance of freedom and stepping out of the constraints that make us unhappy.

The trip felt like a little life of its own, where I reflected, rethought, recovered, and reconnected with my hobby and, seemingly, with myself. Sometimes, we need to slow down and dive into something we love but struggle to accept or try”.

Thank you Aleks for putting yourself out there, for trying, for being open to the experience…. we can’t wait to see what is next for you.

And thank you to Matt and Andreea for offering your mentoring, support and again inspiring another photographer to follow their talent, thank you for being a muse…
